Repairing A Chipped Or Broken Tooth

Many people have chipped one or more of their teeth over the years. Most people assume you are simply chewing something that is harder to crunch, not expecting this problem. It can end up becoming a part your tooth, which can be problematic. It is possible that you will need professional dental care as soon as possible. If you have a chipped or broken tooth, here are some tips to help you fix it.

The enamel that covers your teeth may be the hardest and most mineralized tissue in your body, but it has its limits. A tooth can be broken or chipped by falling, a blow to the head, or biting into something hard, especially if it has already been damaged. Don’t panic if you find that a tooth has been broken or chipped. Your dentist can fix it in many ways.

How To Repair A Broken Tooth

Your dentist should be consulted immediately if your tooth has been broken, chipped or fractured. You could end up losing your tooth if the tooth is not treated promptly. In most cases, your dentist will be able to see you right away. The sooner that you are able to repair or restore your tooth, the higher the probability that you will be able to save. Your dentist may also order options to include its appearance including a dental cap, filling, or crown. Veneers will also be an option, along with extracting the tooth and putting in either a bridge or dental implant.

How To Reduce Your Discomfort

There are several options that you have available in regard to dealing with the pain before you can see the dentist. Acetaminophen, or an over-the-counter pain relief medication, can be used if the tooth hurts. Salt water can be used to rinse your mouth. To prevent the break from cutting your cheeks or inside your lips, wrap it in wax paraffin. Avoid biting into broken teeth if you have to eat.

The severity of the damage to a tooth or broken one will determine how it can be treated. A small amount of enamel can be removed in one visit. Broken or severely damaged teeth may require a more expensive and lengthy procedure. There are quite a few options for your dentist to fix a chipped or broken tooth.

Dental Bonding and Filling

Your dentist might fill the gap if you have only chipped off a little bit of enamel. Your dentist may use bonding to repair a damaged tooth. This involves a tooth-colored composite resin.

Bonding is an easy procedure and does not usually require the use of numbing. The dentist will first roughen the tooth’s surface using a gel or liquid to make it stick to the bonding material. The dentist then applies an adhesive material to the tooth, followed by a tooth color resin. The dentist shapes the bonding material so it looks like natural teeth. Finally, the ultraviolet light is used to harden the material.
