What are Dental Bridges?

A dental bridge can be used to replace a missing tooth. A pontic is a false tooth that is fused to two porcelain crowns. Once they are attached to adjacent teeth, they act as anchors. This is how a dental bridge can be installed.

Why Would You Need A Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is the best choice for replacing a tooth that has fallen out or been extracted by a dentist. There are only two options for replacing a tooth. A dental implant can be inserted. This is usually very expensive. A dental bridge is the best option if you have at least two missing teeth.

The Benefits Of A Dental Bridge

This structure serves two purposes: it provides strength for the pontic and preserves the existing dental structure. The open space left by the missing tooth can encourage surrounding teeth to shift to fill the gap. This can lead to gum disease, and even worse, temporomandibular disorder (TMD).

How A Dental Bridge Works

A dental bridge can be used to bridge a gap in the same way as any other bridge. The pontic is used to bridge the gap between the teeth and the adjacent teeth act as bridge abutments. A typical bridge has two abutment pieces. One on each side of the opening. Sometimes, four teeth can be involved in structural support if there are two missing teeth.

Advantages To Choosing A Dental Bridge

Dental bridges are a permanent solution for missing teeth. They cannot be removed like a denture. However, with good dental hygiene, they can last up to 15 years. They are an aesthetic enhancement that keeps the patient smiling, without making them feel self-conscious. However, they also serve a functional purpose by preserving the bone and allowing you to continue enjoying your favorite foods.

Maryland Bridge or Cantilever: Why You May Need One

Another type of 3-unit fixed bridge, the cantilever bridge, attaches on only one side. This allows for less tooth removal. This type of bridge has one drawback. It can only be used in areas with less stress, such as the front teeth. A Maryland Bridge is a resin-retained bridge that is commonly used to replace front teeth missing. Hidden metal bands are used to support the crowns.

How Important It Is To Prepare The Adjoining Teeth?

To accept crowns, abutment teeth will need to have significant tooth removal. All dental work that affects the area will be done first. The process will take at least two visits. After the teeth are prepared, the dental castings can be made in order to allow the lab to fabricate the bridge. To ensure a perfect fit, the tooth color is carefully matched. Temporary bridges are installed until the permanent one is complete.

How Long Does It Take To Place A Dental Bridge?

Most dental bridges can be completed in just 1-2 visits. The doctors will take impressions from your mouth at your first visit to make the custom-made bridge. The visit will include the preparation of the abutment and installation of crowns. Your temporary bridge will be installed until the permanent one is completed.
